This site is maintained by ACT to provide information, tips, advice and signposting links to anyone considering or entering Self-employment. Specifically, within “What’s Available” can be found details of the Self-employment help and support provided by the Jobcentre Plus schemes which we help to deliver in Devon, Somerset, Dorset and South Wiltshire.

Note that during 2009, because of changes to Government policy, there will be significant changes to the operation of the programmes for Devon and the section with those amendments should be noted carefully. (The other counties should not be affected until 2010.)

The website also contains argument, debate and comment which reflect the local, regional and national lobbying which ACT conducts on Self-employment, enterprise and training issues. As we enter our 33rd. year of involvement with Government and other agency schemes, programmes and initiatives (and at a time of general economic and social uncertainty) we will maintain a long-standing commitment to comment upon policies and strategies which determine the quality of the services which we can provide, and which our Clients can expect. There may very well be disagreement with particular opinions, views and examples – but hopefully not with an objective of seeking continuous improvement.

Our Very Best Wishes to all – and especially those contemplating new ventures in 2009. Look at it this way… if you can establish a new business during recession there is much less chance of the self-delusion and poor control which can emerge in easier times!

Self Employment Savvy Tips

The only activity you do which brings money in– everything else you do is a real or notional cost!
Do not confuse advertising and marketing with actually asking for an order or making a sale.
This can be painful and feel like very personal rejection at times – but it is where you income comes from.
Discipline yourself, and manage your time to make the effort.
If you don’t ask, you probably don’t get!
